Tensioativos (agentes tensioativos) reduzem a tensão superficial entre líquidos ou entre um líquido e um sólido. Possuem partes hidrofílicas e hidrofóbicas e atuam como emulsificantes, detergentes, agentes umectantes e dispersantes.

Os não iônicos não têm carga e são compatíveis com todos os tipos. Os aniônicos têm carga negativa e são excelentes para limpeza. Os catiônicos têm carga positiva para condicionamento e uso antimicrobiano. Os anfóteros podem ter ambas as cargas conforme o pH.
